Rahm Emanuel covered up the murder of a Black teenager, Laquan McDonald, while he was Mayor of Chicago,” tweeted Congressman Mondaire Jones. “That hes being considered for a cabinet position is completely outrageous and, honestly, very hurtful.”.
President Joe Biden supposedly chose Rahm Emanuel, the former Chicago mayor and Obama chief of staff, as his pick for U.S. Ambassador to Japan. More notably, Rahm Emanuel must not have any role in the Biden administration, or any public workplace for that matter.
An Ambassador Rahm Emanuel would total up to absolutely nothing less than a slap in the face to Black voters who supported Biden, and the Black Lives Matter movement. He should not offer Rahm Emanuel any position in the administration if Biden wants to keep Black assistance.
Emanuel does not understand the very first thing about Japan or foreign affairs, aside from his love for war. As somebody who lived and worked in Japan and learnt East Asian Studies in college, I will wager I have even more knowledge of Japan and far more experience in the region than Rahm Emanuel, but thats another story. And the guy should not be permitted anywhere near a federal government position, not even in charge of mowing the White House yard, because of his record of disrespecting Black individuals and covering up the authorities murder of a Black teen called Laquan McDonald.
Van Dyke was founded guilty in 2018 and sentenced to six years and nine months for second-degree murder and 16 counts of worsened battery.
Let us not forget that as mayor, Rahm Emanuel slashed countless dollars from the Chicago public schools, with exorbitant cuts to therapists and social workers, and two-thirds of school curators. He closed 50 schools in primarily Black communities, and he promoted public school privatization and for-profit alternative schools, charter schools and undermining teachers unions.
It is worth noting that the city of Chicago sketchily settled with McDonalds family for $5 million, and the video of the atrocity was not launched by a court up until April 2015– 7 months after Rahm Emanuel was reelected. How hassle-free. Would he have won had the video of the execution of a Black teenager been released in the middle of his reelection campaign? Perhaps well never ever understand.
If you disrespect the AAPI community, and your Japanese experience is restricted to having a sushi roll named after you, you ought to not be the U.S. ambassador to Japan. But if your tradition in federal government service centers around your coverup of the execution of a Black kid by a white cops officer– and bullying individuals– well, that should even more disqualify you from this and any other task.

Emanuel has actually shown sexism and bigotry and employed hazardous racial stereotypes towards other groups. For example, in 2019 he asked an Asian-American female, an environment activist: Are you “up for adoption? … Youre quiet? You do a lot of studying?”.
As consequential as the death of Laquan McDonald and Rahm Emanuels cover up might have been, this is not the only factor for rejecting the guy such a essential and soft job. Emanuel has a long record of disrespecting Black people in Chicago and beyond. Obama needs to have seen something in him to keep him around– and Biden desires him back– but what that might be is anybodys guess.

OPINION: An Ambassador Rahm Emanuel would amount to nothing less than a slap in the face to Black citizens who supported Biden, and the Black Lives Matter movement
The ex-mayor safeguarded his actions in the McDonald case, if that is at all possible. “This is not the first cops shooting in Chicagos history. But it is the shooting thats led to the greatest modifications,” Emanuel said in a Showtime documentary, also claiming he did not view the video footage up until it was released. “I know the reforms weve made. Body cam with every officer, all 13,000 ahead of schedule. A taser to every officer, training associated with it, de-escalation policies, separation of psychological health from a criminal offense” he added describing policing reforms he blocked every step of the method before taking credit for them.
Did Joe Biden believe we forgot this, or is he just politically tone deaf?

McDonald, 17, was shot by one of Chicago Officer Jason Van Dyke, murdered in a hail of 15 bullets in October 2014– in the middle of Mayor Emanuels reelection quote. Or those who keep in mind, 2014 was the time of the Black Lives Matter 1.0 uprising, a year that also declared Eric Garner in New York, Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Tamir Rice in Cleveland to authorities violence.
” Even after the video went public and presentations began, Emanuel opposed a federal civil rights examination into the Chicago authorities and stopped working to provide on civilian oversight of the department,” as Rep. Jamaal Bowman advised us in a commentary for The Appeal. ” In reality, Emanuel stated that authorities were getting fetal in the age of onlooker video. Apparently tough-on-crime isnt difficult enough for Rahm.”

When Biden was thinking about Emanuel for U.S. trade representative, after backlash from progressives tanked his bid for transport secretary, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York tweeted: “What is so difficult to comprehend about this? Rahm Emanuel assisted cover the murder of Laquan McDonald. Covering up a murder is disqualifying for public management. This is not about the presence of a post. It is disgraceful and concerning that he is even being thought about.”.
